PIANO - PIANO - Martin Witzel - The Piano Expert In the Western Cape South Africa
Allie from Suikerbossie corner cafe, and Martin and Martine from Piano - Piano in Fontein street Wellington, hosted a musical Saturday, to liven up Fontein Street. Piet from the Paarl Haven, was given an opportunity to play an electric piano outside the shop, in order to share his wonderful talent with the general public, thereby restoring his dignity as a human being even though he is less privileged. Allie, Martin and Martine, strongly believe that it is there social responsibility to encourage individuals with talent to perfom, and by doing so, they too, are giving something back to the community. They are planning to have more entertainment on various Saturdays outside their shops. So, for something different, free entertainment, and a well priced tasty boerewors roll, Fontein Street is the place to be.

Piano, Piano where from art thou?

Growing up in Franschhoek Wellington was known for four things:  Huguenot College, the leather tannery, the heat (‘Hellington’) and the piano factory.  The piano factory has sadly closed down, but the piano trade in Wellington is being kept alive by Martin and Martine Witzel in their shop Piano-Piano.

Martin opened Piano-Piano three years ago after falling in love with the Cape during a South African holiday – during which he also met his partner Martine.  Martin is a German Master Piano Builder and Tuner who worked in New York and Germany, including at the Bluethner and Grotrian-Steinweg piano factories before settling in Wellington.

Piano-Piano’s stock includes new and used pianos by Kemble in London, Grotrian-Steinweg and even an antique Stichel upright piano from Leipzig in a walnut root finish.  Lothar Schell is another of the piano brands they stock.  Interestingly Lothar Schell used to be the designer at Wellington’s Dietmann piano factory.

Piano-Piano however does more than just sell pianos.  Martin is sought after as an exceptional piano tuner and they also hire out pianos throughout the Western Cape.  Have you ever listened to a pianist performing at an event in the valley and wondered where the piano came from?  The answer may very well be Piano-Piano in Wellington.

In addition Piano-Piano also undertakes the transport of pianos – a difficult, but delicate job – as well as piano repairs.  They also sell other instruments such as trumpets, trombones, saxophones, and violins.  If you are looking for guitar strings, reeds, mouthpieces, harmonicas and sheet music stands they are also the place to go to.  Whether you’re a music lover or a musician a visit to Piano-Piano in Wellington should be high on your agenda.
